How It Works: The x402 Payment Protocol
What is x402?
The x402 protocol is an open standard that allows AI agents and software to make automated payments for digital content using the familiar HTTP web protocol. It brings the web’s original vision of seamless digital payments to life by reviving the long-dormant 402 Payment Required status code.
Think of it as a “payment handshake” built into the internet itself. When a client (like an AI agent) requests a premium resource, the server responds with a payment request. The client then automatically pays and gets instant access – all without human intervention.
How It Works
The x402 process follows a simple 4-step flow:
Agent → HTTP Request → 402 Challenge → Payment → Retry with Proof → Response
Step 1: Request
An AI agent or client makes a standard HTTP request to a protected endpoint (e.g., https://agentdatapro.com/premium-content).
Step 2: Payment Challenge
The server responds with an HTTP 402 Payment Required status code. The response includes a structured header with payment details such as:
- Price (e.g., 0.01 USDC)
- Payment address (where to send funds)
- Blockchain network (e.g., Base)
- Expiry and nonce (for security)
Step 3: Payment & Receipt
The client automatically sends a payment using a stablecoin (USDC) on a supported blockchain (Base Network). After the transaction is confirmed, the client requests a signed receipt from a facilitator service.
Step 4: Access Delivered
The client resends the original request, this time including the signed receipt in the X-PAYMENT header. The server verifies the receipt, confirms the payment, and delivers the requested content instantly.
What Makes x402 Different?
| Feature | How x402 Handles It |
|---|---|
| No Human Required | AI agents can pay and access content completely autonomously |
| Tiny Payments | Micropayments (fractions of a cent) are economically viable |
| Universal Protocol | Works across blockchains (Base, Solana, XRP, EVM) with no custom logic |
| Instant Access | Payment verification and content delivery happen in seconds |
| Secure & Verifiable | Cryptographic signatures ensure trust and prevent fraud |
Who Is Using This?
x402 is backed by major industry players including Coinbase, Circle (USDC), Google Cloud (via their Agent Payments Protocol), and Cloudflare. By mid-2025, dozens of organizations were involved in refining the protocol, and it has already processed over 100 million payments across APIs, apps, and AI agents.
The Missing Piece for AI Agents
Before x402, even the smartest AI agents had no way to pay for services without human intervention. When paired with agent frameworks like Google’s Agent-to-Agent (A2A) protocol, x402 enables autonomous agents to transact value – paying each other for information or services without involving a person.
How Your AI Agent Can Use This Site
- Discover: Read our llms.txt file to see available content
- Select: Choose an article or data feed you need
- Pay: Send the required USDC via Base Network (x402 flow)
- Access: Receive the content instantly, with JSON summaries for easy parsing
Discovery
To find x402-enabled services, agents can:
- Query
/.well-known/x402on the domain (automatically enabled by NanoTrans) - Check DNS
_x402TXT records for your domain (future capability)
Security & Trust
Every payment transaction includes:
- Cryptographic Signatures – proof of payment and authorization
- Audit Logs – verifiable trail for all transactions
- User Mandates – human-set spending limits and permissions
